Serenata Mexicana
 with Don Raoul Turrieta
A legendary chapter in local radio history comes to life once again as the beloved “Serenata Mexicana” returns to the airwaves. First broadcast in 1968 at KSIL Radio with the iconic Bill Acosta, this show became a staple for families across Silver City and Grant County, offering both lively music and heartwarming humor. The program was more than just a show—it was an experience that brought communities together, as families gathered around the radio to share laughter, jokes, and memories. Whether it was the fun phrase “Queda do con la manini” or the stories of family taco nights, “Serenata Mexicana” was a cherished tradition. It even inspired the Taco Tuesday phenomenon we know today. The musical offerings were no less remarkable. With sounds of love and peace, the show featured a range of iconic local talent as well as popular Mexican, Chicano, and Tejano artists like Ray Camacho, Little Joe, Ruben Ramos, Latin Breed, Jimmy Edwards, Mazz, Selena, Cornelio Reyna, and many others. The program became a bridge to the past, and now, we have the opportunity to relive those golden moments. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Don Raoul and Joe Lara, “Serenata Mexicana” is now back on KURU 89.1 FM and livestreaming at gmcr.org every Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM. Joe Lara, in particular, has played a pivotal role in preserving decades of music, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same tunes and laughter that once filled the homes of local families. As the airwaves echo once more with the sound of music and laughter, we invite everyone in Grant County and beyond to tune in and celebrate the past. Les daba muncho amimo, love, and joy that “Serenata Mexicana” please join us to bring to Silver City and its surrounding communities for decades.
